Ascot Island, Perth Australia
The partial rehabilitation of Ascot Waters Public Open Space from former landfill is an important addition to the Swan River Environs. The site is potentially a haven for fauna and a positive force in improving river water quality. However, natural ecology is not the only force defining the identity of the island. As an inner city public resource, the area is under pressure to accommodate a raft of cultural uses; education, observation, recreation, contemplation, and tourism, to name a few, are all potential programs for the site. Students proposed futures for the site that give due consideration to these competing interests.
